The Bahamas Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference was officially announced by Grand Bahamas Minister of State Kwasi Thompson at a press conference held at the Prime Minister’s Office. Pelican Bay May 24, 2018.
The meeting is scheduled for June 20-22 at Big Lucayandescribed by Minister Thompson as the “coming out party” for blockchain and fintech.
Representatives from 500 companies are expected to gather in Grand Bahama to meet with investors and entrepreneurs.
The Minister said Grand Bahama is suited to be a technology hub in the region, adding that the inaugural Technology Summit held in November brought together some of the best minds.
“this Technology Summit has played an important role in launching the strategic process of building a technology sector in the Bahamas. The Government has begun implementing the recommendations of the Steering Committee to make this Technology Centre a reality. I would like to thank in particular Dr. Donovan Moxey, who is the Director of the Bahamas Technology Centre. GB Tech Hub Steering Committee“”.
“One of the recommendations that we are implementing is to host a major international conference that will attract hundreds of technology companies to Grand Bahama. It was one of their first recommendations and we are implementing one of their first recommendations.”
He added: “The committee also recommended that this conference should take the form of a venture capital conference to establish The Bahamas as a global player in bringing in venture capitalists for seed and early stage companies. Basically, bringing entrepreneurs and investors together to seek to build and develop relationships.”
Announcing plans for the upcoming conference, the Minister said: “I am pleased to announce the Bahamas Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference (BBCC), which is designed to attract investors, entrepreneurs, service providers and technology companies from around the world who are focused on investing, starting and growing companies and building business relationships using blockchain technology.”
“In addition, the BBCC will provide an opportunity for The Bahamas, and Grand Bahama in particular, to present itself to the world as a jurisdiction with an established framework, financial and immigration policies that are conducive to technology and fintech companies that wish to incorporate and locate in The Bahamas.”
Topics discussed included: The tech sector in The Bahamas is open for business; Why should we invest in The Bahamas; A global perspective on regulatory frameworks for cryptocurrencies and ICOs; and What does the future hold for blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and fintech solutions.
“We also hope that this conference will help promote Freeport Grand Bahama as an ideal location for new technology companies to establish offices and global headquarters.”
The guests in attendance will be “high-powered” speakers and even one or two from the Forbes Crypto Billionaires list.

It is widely expected that the hosting of the conference will have a direct impact on the local economy, with a boost to hotel rooms, taxis, restaurants, tours and everything else the island offers. Minister Thompson noted that it is important for the island to show visitors why Grand Bahama is a great place to invest.

He encouraged Bahamian businessmen and aspiring entrepreneurs to attend the conference.
