Today, the Development and Rights Commission and the Yemen Permanent Peace Organization, in cooperation with the Media Department of the Faculty of Arts of Taiz University and the Yemen Permanent Peace Organization, organized an international conference entitled “Media and Social Responsibility in the Fight against Corruption”. The Department of Media and Communication Sciences of the Faculty of Arts of Mohammed V University in Morocco held online lectures through the Zoom platform at the Al-Thulaya Hall of the Faculty of Arts of Taiz University.
The conference opened with the national anthem and welcomed the participants, in the opening session chaired by Dr. Hisham Al-Sulaihi, who presented the conference, its importance and the reasons for organizing it, while Dr. Raeda Al-Dhabhani, Regional Director of the Commission for Development and Rights, in her opening speech, said that the international conference organized by the Commission is the first initiative in a series of activities and events that the Commission for Development and Rights will implement in Taiz and other governorates, aimed at fighting corruption, strengthening media and social accountability, transparency, the rule of law and a number of important issues and phenomena, praising the efforts of partners, the Ministry of Media of Taiz University and the Department of Media and Communication Sciences – Mohammed V University, Morocco.
Dr. Yahya Al-Madhaji, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, welcomed the participants on behalf of Taiz University and stressed the importance of organizing this conference, as it contributes to the development of accountability at the media and social levels as a basis for achieving the goal of comprehensive development in line with the realities of our country.
In his speech at the Supreme National Anti-Corruption Committee, Judge Hussein Barja, a member of the committee, spoke about the role of the committee in fighting corruption, upholding rights and achieving optimal use of resources, and mentioned the international agreements and UN treaties signed by Yemen and ratified them, and how these agreements help strengthen the role of the committee in the fight against corruption.
Fayez al-Nouman, Deputy Minister of Information, also stressed the importance of joint efforts to fight corruption by building effective partnerships between civil society organizations and the media on the one hand and official regulatory agencies on the other to promote integrity and transparency and the rule of law.
Speaking at the opening of the second session of the conference, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Bin Dahan, Director of the Media and Communication Sciences Department at the Faculty of Arts of Mohammed V University, Morocco, spoke about the conference’s emphasis on strengthening media and social accountability in the context of what the Arab countries are experiencing, praising the qualitative scientific demonstrations and activities carried out by the conference partners and organizers in the framework of strengthening accountability and fighting corruption.
In the second session of the conference chaired by Dr. Mohamed Hatem, participating researchers from 5 Arab countries (Morocco, Sudan, Jordan, Egypt, Yemen) reviewed a series of working papers discussing media and social responsibility and its importance in combating corruption and its role in assessing public life and correcting the performance of government institutions and public bodies and its role in promoting transparency and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
