Brown-Piff won the support of 220 MPs in the third round of voting. In second place was Andre Chassaigne, a 74-year-old Communist candidate from the left-wing New Popular Front coalition, who came in second with 207 votes. In third place was Sebastien Chenu, a former deputy speaker of the right-wing National Rally party, who received 141 votes.
“We see a country that is worried and divided, so now we have a huge responsibility,” Brown-Pivette said from the parliamentary podium after the election results were announced. “On behalf of the French people, we need to live in harmony, cooperate, seek compromises, dialogue, listen to each other and move forward.”
There were six candidates participating in the first round of the speaker election, including Charles de Coulson, a representative of the Centre Party, Philippe Juve of the Republicans, and Naima Mushou, a member of the Horizon Party and the Presidential Alliance. The last two withdrew their candidacy after the first round of voting, and de Coulson withdrew from the third round of voting. If the first two rounds only require an absolute majority of votes, that is, at least 285 votes, to win, then the third round will be determined by a simple majority.
Brown-Piff received legal training and became a member of the Bar Association after graduating from university. In 2016, she joined the En Marche party founded by then-French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron. In 2022, she served as Minister of Overseas Territories for a month and served as President of the National Assembly from June 28, 2022.
