Former Somali Foreign Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam supports Raila Odinga for AU chairmanship

NAIROBI (HOL) – Former Somalia’s Foreign Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam has endorsed former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is one of the four candidates vying to succeed the current African Union (AU) Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.

Adam Withdrawal from the election Earlier this week, candidates for the election of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) came under pressure from leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and the four federal member states, allegedly at the request of Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

Adam and Odinga met in Nairobi, Kenya on Friday to discuss the region and the African Union chairperson election. After the meeting, Adam announced his support for Odinga, whose campaign gained further momentum as candidates from Somalia and Seychelles withdrew.

“I am pleased to announce my support for the candidacy of the Honourable Raila Odinga for Chairperson of the African Union Commission. I sincerely wish him success in this important position. Furthermore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the governments and individuals who have previously supported my candidacy,” she wrote on Twitter.

The election for the AU chairmanship is scheduled to be held in February next year. The four candidates currently registered include Raila Odinga of Kenya, Djibouti Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Youssouf, the candidate from Mauritius and the candidate from Madagascar.
