Former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Dulip Samaraweera is facing an investigation by Cricket Australia for alleged gross misconduct towards a female player.

The Herald Sun first reported that former Victorian women’s cricket coach Samaraweera was accused of historic sexual conduct towards the former professional cricketer.

Cricket Australia’s integrity unit is handling the matter, and the same media outlet reported that a code of conduct hearing will be held in due course.

The 52-year-old former cricketer was to coach the Australia A women’s cricket team in the series against India A but was sacked after the allegations came to light.

“Cricket Victoria is unable to comment on this as the competition is ongoing and we will comment on this in due course,” Cricket Victoria president Nick Cummins told the Herald Sun.

After retiring, Samaraweera moved to Australia, where he coached for more than a decade.

He played five Test matches and seven One-Day Internationals for the national team.

Samaraweera has served as an assistant coach for the Victorian Women’s Team and the Melbourne Stars of the World Basketball League.

The 52-year-old was promoted to head coach of the Victorian women’s team last year but resigned after just two weeks in the role.

According to the Herald Sun, his departure was due to his desire to hire his brother Thilan Samaraweera as the team’s batting coach, in violation of CV’s conflict of interest rules.

Andrew Christie is currently the coach of the Victorian Women’s National Team.

According to the outlet, Samaraweera had a good professional relationship with several of the state’s top players, some of whom initially lobbied him to continue as batting coach when he left the position.

As of the time of publication, he has not publicly responded to the allegations.
