One of those times was at Manchester United, with the giant striker spending the second half of the 2022-23 season at Old Trafford.

Weghorst played 31 games under Erik ten Hag, scoring just two goals during that time. But he did help the Red Devils win a trophy, beating Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final in February 2023.

During his time at Manchester United, Weghorst was loaned out to Besiktas and Hoffenheim, and now he is set to make a permanent move to Ajax.

Speaking about the prospect of returning home, Weghorst recently told Kicker magazine: “For me, everything has to be perfect, we are expecting our fourth child and we have travelled a lot as a family in recent years.”

“Ajax are the biggest club in the Netherlands, I don’t need to say much.”

Ajax have already missed out on Feyenoord’s Kalvin Stengs and Justin Bielow this summer, but now they are set to land Weghorst, who scored the winning goal for the Netherlands in their opening match of Euro 2024 against Poland before Ronald Koeman’s side reached the semi-finals.

Weghorst’s arrival could spell the end of Chuba Akpom’s career at Ajax, just one year after his move from Middlesbrough.

The English player scored 11 goals in 25 league games last season, but he could be looking for a new club in the coming days, with Weghorst expected to overtake him in the pecking order.
