Puerto Rican volleyball player Pilar Marie Victoria Lopez played for Texas Longhorn and a college player for the Arkansas Razorbacks, now deceased.
Lopez’s death was reported by the Austin American-Statesman and confirmed by numerous social media posts from the volleyball community. She was 28.
On Thursday, August 29, 2024, Lopez was reportedly found dead in his apartment in Turkey after failing to attend team training.
Volleyball blog Volleytrails wrote on Facebook that the circumstances of her death remain mysterious and an investigation has been launched.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of Pilar Marie Victoria, 29-year-old Puerto Rican national team player who was scheduled to play for Turkish team Nilufer Belediyespor this season. She was found dead in her apartment a few hours ago. The cause of her death is still unknown and the prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation.” the page reads.

Pilar Marie Victoria Lopez is well-known in the United States for her role as a star player for the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns, helping the team reach the Final Four twice in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Later, she transferred to the University of Arkansas Razorbacks and became the team’s main offensive weapon.
In 2015, Lopez recorded 35 kills in a five-game match against Ole Miss, the second-most kills in Razorbacks history. That season, she recorded 525 kills, which ranked first in the SEC and 13th in the nation. Her performance earned her SEC All-Star and AVCA All-Region South honors.
After graduating from college, she played in several professional leagues in Europe before joining the Turkish league this season.
Internationally, she has also represented the Puerto Rico Women’s National Volleyball Team at the 2015 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix and 2016 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix. She won a bronze medal with the Puerto Rico Youth National Team at the 2010 NORCECA Youth Championship in Guatemala.
The news of Pilar Marie Victoria Lopez’s death shocked social media users, who expressed their condolences.
