Former Basha and former councillor Franklin June were today taken to their final resting place in Apolla in the presence of the Kabalebo Indigenous community, family and friends.

Vice-president Ronnie Brunswijk and sustainable Aboriginal development director Melisa Fredericks also attended the funeral.

Cyne France, director of the VIDS office, expressed condolences to Kabalebo’s family and community on behalf of the Association of Indigenous Village Heads of Suriname (VIDS).

Kim Jong-un died in the early hours of Wednesday, June 12, at the age of 72. In the 1970s, during the implementation of the West Suriname Project, he was one of the advocates against the planned relocation of residents of Apoera (along the Corentin River). The demolition was not carried out due to the protests of residents mobilized and led by him and others.

He later became a basja and was one of the village chiefs of Apoera, Section and Washabo villages. Kim Jong-un was also active in politics. He became a member of parliament in the 1990s.
