Wang Yanyue, the operations director of Focus Tech Lab, a local artificial intelligence (AI) startup under the Education University, admitted that when the team commercialized the artificial intelligence (AI) strabismus diagnostic device, it still received a lot of negative comments from the outside world in the early stage. “(Inside) it was quite uncomfortable.” She believes that the overall environment is currently sluggish, and investors will be more cautious in their actions.

Focus Tech Lab was established in May this year. In just a few months, it has started to record profits, but everything is still in its infancy. Wang Yanyue said that the team still insisted that the diagnostic instrument should take the business-to-business (B2B) route at the beginning, but when they approached investors, they were “poured cold water”.

Wang Yanyue continued that as a medical device, if the diagnostic instrument wants to enter hospitals and clinics, obtaining relevant certification is the first step. She took the mainland market as an example, “It costs a lot of money to obtain a Class II medical device certificate; if you want to achieve globalization, you also need to obtain certification from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is a very expensive project.”

Wang Yanyue pointed out that the team was inevitably frustrated at the time, but believed that the investors’ ideas always reflect the objective needs of the market. In view of this, Focus Tech Lab divides the diagnostic instrument into a professional version and a business-to-consumer (B2C) version. The latter is convenient for individual users to use a mobile application (App) with a small diagnostic machine for preliminary testing and rehabilitation observation. Talking about the future research and development direction, Wang Yanyue revealed that she will continue to collect hierarchical data to improve the accuracy of model diagnosis.

One of the members, Nie Fengzhi, mentioned that the team is also developing a non-contact pointing robot that can be operated remotely. Nie Fengzhi added that the team hopes to equip the robot with a glove that has pressure and temperature sensors to automatically determine whether the temperature of the target is safe and the force required to grasp it.
