The north has seen unusually heavy rains over the past two days, with flash floods and landslides. Feykir said yesterday that the Siglufjörður road between Ketilás and Siglufjörður was closed and remains closed. A landslide occurred above the pedestrian bridge in Hofsá, and also in Reykjaströnd and Vatnsdal.
All the cuts and channels are filled with rainwater, which flows down the slopes and ground to the sea. Feykir received information about landslides in Reykjaströnd, but it can be said that the eastern part of Tindastól has almost been covered with clouds and rain for more than 24 hours. Úlfar Sveinsson, a farmer in Ingveldarstaðir, told Feyki that quite a few landslides have occurred, but they did not block the roads around Strand. He then said that a small landslide occurred near Ingveldarstaðir, but he did not think it caused any damage.
Ingvar Daða of Hofsø then sent Feyki photos of the landslide that had plunged into the Hofsø river, but it left a sizeable scar in this beautiful spot where the Hofsø river flows toward the old bridge. Elvar of the Hofsø Gretti rescue team told Feyki that municipality employees had cordoned off the area above the landslide with wooden boards. Asked if the area was still dangerous, he said he couldn’t say. “In any case, it’s not wise to hang around on the slopes and riverbanks. You never know if the rain will get heavier or if the river will fill up with noise.”
Fekir also received reports of a major landslide north of the town of Yalaland in Vatersdal in Österhunavatn county. According to farmer Jón Gíslason á Hofi, the area has received a lot of rainfall, which is clearly different and very localized. He said that as the weather recedes, there will definitely be more rain.
People are reminded to be careful as the ground may be sensitive after recent rains, particularly on hillsides and near river beds, where the force and volume of water is high.
