A helicopter carrying five people crashed in a forest on the outskirts of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, shortly after takeoff on Wednesday, killing all on board, an official said, the latest in a series of more than a dozen accidents in Nepal’s mountainous region since 2000.
The helicopter, which belonged to Dynasty Air, crashed in a Himalayan forest 57 km from the capital, said Krishna Prasad Humagin, deputy district police commissioner. Police spokesman Dhan Bahadur Karki confirmed that the passengers on the plane were three men and one woman, all from China, and that the pilot was Nepalese. He added that local residents saw the forest fire and informed the authorities.
Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement: The helicopter was flying to the Rasuwa area on Wednesday afternoon and lost contact with air traffic control three minutes after takeoff. More than 360 people have died in plane or helicopter crashes in Nepal over the past 24 years.
