According to officials, the EFSTH oxygen plant project is being implemented by the African Infrastructure Relief and Support (AIRS) in partnership with several global healthcare organizations, with funding provided to the Society of Critical Care Medicine through Direct Relief, and is being implemented by the Institute of Global Perioperative Care (IGPC).
Speaking at the ceremony, First Lady Fatoumata Bah Barrow said she was delighted to witness the launch of a project that will revolutionize healthcare delivery in the country.
She said the installation of an oxygen plant for the Edward Francis Minor Teaching Hospital was a historic development that would boost health services at the country’s major referral hospital.
“The groundbreaking facility we are touring today represents more than just technological advancement; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative power of innovation and collaboration,” said the First Lady. “Designed to generate and circulate medical oxygen directly to a patient’s bedside via a wall outlet, this plant will significantly enhance the level of care provided by EFSTH, ensuring our patients receive the life-saving oxygen they need with maximum efficiency and reliability.”
She added: “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the African Infrastructure Relief and Support (AIRS) programme, which has worked in partnership with several global health organisations to make this ground-breaking facility a reality. Your tireless dedication and commitment to improving healthcare in The Gambia is truly commendable. This project was made possible by the generous funding of the Society for Critical Care Medicine, an organisation run by Direct Relief.”
The First Lady highly praised the Egyptian Health Services for being at the forefront of providing health services to the people in the country and hinted that the support provided by the partners will pave the way for a better future for the people of the country through the various impacts that the oxygen plant will bring.
Ms. Barrow also disclosed that the installation of the oxygen unit symbolizes a major step forward in improving the quality of health services in the country, adding that the oxygen unit is not just a piece of equipment, it is also a lifeline for patients visiting EFSTH, it will bring comfort to those in distress, restore hope to those in despair and most importantly, it has saved countless lives.
In his closing remarks, the acting Minister of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, to the Minister of Health, Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, reviewed the challenges faced by the health sector during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely providing enough oxygen for the large number of patients admitted to the EFSTH.
He said the installation of oxygen equipment would solve these problems and provide adequate oxygen to patients without causing much trouble to patients visiting EFSTH.
He introduced that the newly installed oxygen plant is unique in the region and is environmentally friendly, with less reliance on North American natural gas power plants. In addition, the burden of lifting and carrying heavy oxygen cylinders is a thing of the past, as the oxygen tubes are mounted on the wall and connected directly to the patient’s bed.
Professor Pierre Gomes said the oxygen plant is a promising project that aims to restore lives and address challenges encountered by hospitals, adding that President Adama Barrow wants to provide quality healthcare services to the Gambian people as demonstrated by the numerous interventions carried out by the Gambia Ministry of Health across the country.
Ambassador Erica Bennett commended the First Lady for taking the lead in ensuring that the needs of Gambian patients are fully met, and said that the Fatoumata Baha Barrow Foundation’s continued support to the health sector is a testament to the First Lady’s commitment to restoring hope and health well-being to the people of The Gambia.
She also commended all the sponsors and partners who made the project possible while thanking the Ministry of Health and EFSTH officials for their tireless efforts in providing quality health services to Gambians and non-Gambians in the country.
