The fire started on a Maltese-flagged yacht and despite initial efforts by marina staff to contain it, it quickly spread to three nearby vessels, two also flying the Maltese flag and one flying the British flag. The intensity of the fire and the close proximity of the vessels made firefighting efforts difficult.
An emergency response team was dispatched, including 26 firefighters, 10 vehicles, a fireboat and four tugboats. The Coast Guard also sent three patrol boats to evacuate 11 people trapped on the pier, who were safely transported away from the scene.
Although the British-flagged yacht managed to sail away, its stern was severely damaged, and the other three vessels were severely damaged and eventually sank. To address the potential environmental hazard, the Port Authority deployed a floating anti-fouling barrier around the area and cordoned off the area for public safety.
One firefighter reportedly had difficulty breathing and collapsed while extinguishing the fire, but is expected to make a full recovery. The fire was fully extinguished by early Friday morning, with no further injuries reported.
The Fifth Port Department at Zeya Terminal has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which has raised concerns about safety measures and protocols at the terminal.
