Property worth $198 million was damaged in the Makuza Peace Plaza building.
The building caught fire and after calculating the damage, they found it was worth 198 million Rwandan francs.
Rwanda police spokesman ACP Boniface Rutikanga said the building was insured but the owner’s belongings had not been seized.
The cause of the noise was said to be a “circuit” causing the basement room to be occupied.
“The fire damaged the goods of five people working in the building, including those working together,” he said.
Fire damage included bed linens, textiles, curtains, phones, computers and other electronic equipment.
ACP Rutikanga went on to say that “luckily, no one was injured or killed due to the lack of timely intervention by security agencies”.
ACP Rutikanga advised traders to buy insurance for their produce so that they can get compensation when they are at risk of suffering from fire.
