In the early hours of Friday, August 2, a fire broke out in Building 5 of the San Salvador Central Market, located between Calle Poniente 12 and Avenida de Agosto 29. The fire started at around 3:20 a.m. and was brought under control in just 1 hour and 20 minutes, thanks to the joint efforts of more than 50 firefighters.

The fire chief stressed the speed with which the incident was brought under control, especially given the presence of highly flammable materials such as animal oils and edible vegetables in the area: “The extinguishing of this material was very complicated,” he famously said.

The affected building is known for storing a variety of products, mainly meat, but other food products are also sold. As of now, the cause of the fire has not been determined and investigations are continuing to find out the cause of the incident. There are also no reports of injuries.

Four electric pumps and a tanker were used to extinguish the fire, with the cooperation of the National Civil Police and members of the San Salvador Central Mayor’s Office.
