Fire breaks out at auto repair shop in New Lynn, Auckland; waste oil containers near fire a concern

Fenz dispatched eight fire engines, two ladder trucks, three specialized appliances and three support vehicles to the scene. Crews from 10 different fire stations participated in the rescue.

“The public is asked to stay away from the area and comply with road closures while firefighters are working,” Fentz said.

Just after 7 p.m., Assistant Fire Commander Barry Thomas at the scene said the fire was under control.

“We are currently conducting a preliminary fire investigation, just trying to determine the cause of the fire.”

Thomas said crews saw flames coming from the back of the building and as the fire progressed, flames also came from the front of the building.

He added that aerial platforms were also involved.

“Apparently there were some burns inside. There were also reports of gas canisters inside the building.

“We had another hazard which was a half-full waste oil container at the rear of the workshop, but our crews are safe at this time and they have the fire under control,” Thomas said.

Police confirmed they received reports of the fire at around 6pm and were assisting with traffic management.

“The road is closed between Clark St and Great North Rd.

“Drivers and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area and be prepared for delays,” a police spokesman said.
