Award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker Armando “Ice” Rao has died at the age of 75.
Hailed as a genius of Philippine independent films, he has won numerous awards for his screenplays such as “Takaw-Tukso” (Urian Best Screenplay, 1987), “Itanong mo sa Buwan” (Urian Best Screenplay, 1989), “Oras-Oras, Araw” (Academy Award for Best Screenplay, 1990), “Sana Pag-ibig Na”, “Pila-Balde” (Urian Best Screenplay, 2000), “Tuhog” (Urian Best Screenplay, 2001), “La Vida Rosa” (Urian Best Screenplay, 2002), and “Serbis” (Official Entry to the Cannes Film Festival, 2008).
Law founded the Found Story filmmaking school, sharing his decades of writing experience and knowledge with more than 40 cohorts of aspiring writers and artists.
Outside of the classroom, he serves as a creative consultant and mentor to several Filipino filmmakers, many of whom have received international recognition under his guidance, such as Kubrador, Kinatay, Masahista, Foster Child, Taklub, John Denver Trending, Ma Rosa, Tribu, Pamilya Ordinaryo, and many more.
Last April, he was awarded the “Parangal ng Sining” award by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), a recognition given to exemplary Filipino artists or organizations that have made a significant impact on Philippine cinema.
Mr Lowe accepted the award in person despite being paralysed on the right side of his body and unable to speak. He suffered a stroke in 2022.
The Film, Broadcasting and New Media Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) said his works will serve as “cultural archives for generations to come.”
“His depictions of Filipino culture and experiences help to promote the country’s heritage through film,” CCP stressed in a Facebook post.
