As cricket grows in Fiji, the Fiji Cricket Association’s efforts to revitalize and expand the sport have won recognition from Fijian President Ratu William Maiwalili Katoniwere.
The 14-member Fiji Cricket team presented their iTatau at the National Parliament House this morning before departing for Samoa for the 2026 Men’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers.
“I am very happy to witness the revival of a sport that has deep roots in our country’s history and is still thriving today,” President Catoniville told the team.
“Just a few days ago I welcomed a group of young women heading to Colombia for the Women’s Under-20 Football World Cup. So it is an honour to see off a group of young men heading to Samoa for the 2026 Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup qualifiers,” he added.
President Katoniwere stressed the importance of Fijian youths representing the country on the world stage, noting that Fiji is on the verge of becoming a dominant force in various sports with young men and women making their mark around the world.
In closing, he urged the players to “be exemplary ambassadors of the game of cricket and most importantly you represent Fiji in Samoa and be exemplary ambassadors for our country.”
The Fiji men’s cricket team is scheduled to depart for Samoa on Thursday 19 August.
