El Benque, Jamastrán Valley, El Paraíso – The Ficohsa Foundation launched the rehabilitation project of the José Trinidad Cabañas Basic Education Center, located in the community of El Benque, in the department of El Paraíso, as part of the “Alliance for Education” established with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Education. To date, within the framework of this alliance, Fundación Ficohsa has supported 22 educational centers throughout the country, renovating 261 classrooms and benefiting 9,480 students and 397 teachers across the country.
Major improvements to the José Trinidad Cabañas Basic Education Center include replacing the roof, updating the electrical system, rebuilding the sidewalks, and installing balconies and general painting. The community has contributed to the cleaning of the center, the repair and painting of the walls, and the construction of a stage. All of this is to provide a decent and safer facility so that students and teachers can better carry out their academic activities.
Within the framework of the “Education Alliance”, the Ficohsa Foundation aims to transform more than 280 classrooms in 25 basic education centers across the country, located near the preschool centers it has supported for many years, to benefit more than 10,500 children and adolescents from the same community.
Don Juan Carlos Atala, President of the Ficohsa Foundation, stressed: “This inauguration clearly reflects our continued commitment to education in Honduras. We firmly believe that improving educational infrastructure is key to providing a safe, supportive and holistic environment for our children and youth to develop.”
Caitlin McElroy, deputy director of the USAID Office of Education, noted that much can be achieved through concerted efforts and teamwork, and praised the work done by the Ficohsa Foundation and SEDUC for children and youth in Honduras, which is part of the Education Alliance.
Karla Simón, Executive Director of the Ficohsa Foundation, added: «Education is the most powerful tool for transforming our communities. Every center we renovate is an investment in the future of thousands of children and young people who deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The event concluded with a tour of the renovated facility, where attendees could see firsthand the improvements that had been made. The El Benque community enthusiastically celebrated the transformation of its educational center, which now provides a safer and more welcoming environment for all students.
