The Senegalese women’s national basketball team now knows where they will be in the September 2024 FIBA Africa Rankings. The Lionesses are third, behind Nigeria and Mali.
After an impressive performance in the 2026 Women’s World Cup qualifiers in Rwanda, Yacine Diop’s side won three consecutive group stage matches against Hungary, Brazil and the Philippines to reach the final. The Lionesses eliminated hosts Rwanda in the semi-finals before losing to Hungary in the final. Senegal ranked third in Africa and 24th in the world.
The 2024 FIBA rankings, updated on August 26, 2024, confirm Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball, ranking first on the continent and eighth in the world. Mali is ranked 20th in the world and second in Africa, while Senegal is ranked third in the world and 24th in the world.
Mozambique, Cameroon and Egypt made it into the African semi-finals, highlighting the growing potential of women’s basketball on the continent.
