(CNS): A fire in a generator in the yard of a condominium on Fern Circle off Fairbanks Road in George Town on Monday, Aug. 19, displaced 23 people after the planning department declared the property illegal, according to the Cayman Islands Red Cross. The Red Cross opened its shelter that evening to provide assistance to those affected.
The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) said it received a 911 call about a fire in the generator room of the residence in the early hours of the morning. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found that the generator fire had been put out by the resident using buckets of water from a cistern.
However, further inspection revealed that the fire was on the ceiling and roof of the generator room to the east of the main house, which is separate from the main house. The CIFS team quickly extinguished the fire, preventing the spread of the fire and further property damage. No injuries were reported.
“I am extremely proud of our firefighters for their quick and effective response to yet another fire incident. Their training and coordination played a major role in bringing this fire under control,” said Fire Chief Randy Rankin.
Meanwhile, CFO Rankin urged the public to make fire safety a priority. “If we work together, we can keep our community safe. Our firefighters will always be ready to respond, but please do your part to prevent fires as they can have devastating consequences.”
Eight people were staying at a Red Cross shelter. The CIRC said its volunteers and staff took the affected people to the shelter, collected personal belongings and ensured they had a hot dinner.
The CIRC said it has worked with Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) and the Jamaican Consulate to coordinate assistance and will provide ongoing support to those affected by the fires.
