On Thursday, July 18, 2024, Felwine Sarr co-hosted a conference with the Doctoral School of Law, Politics, Economics and Administrative Sciences (ED_JPEG) on the theme “Thinking about the Living Economy: Theory, Practice and Axiology”. The event attracted a large number of students, professors, researchers and fans of economic and legal sciences.
Felwine Sarr, economist and philosopher, Anne-Marie Bryan Professor at Duke University, discusses the theoretical, practical and axiological aspects of his vision for a new economy. He insists on the need to reintegrate the human and ecological dimensions into the core of economic models.
It begins with questioning the economic discourse order established over the centuries:
“Economics is a discipline that adheres to a discursive order carefully constructed over the centuries and does not deviate from it. It is this discursive order that I want to question. ยป
Professor Saar highlighted the current economic crisis and stressed the urgency of rethinking the economy around the concept of a life economy (carbon-neutral economy). He advocated a paradigm shift, claiming that classical economics is not enough to understand contemporary economic objects. He believed that it is essential to integrate tools from disciplines such as history, anthropology, humanities and social sciences, and law.
Professor Saar suggested that economic science should become more open and promote interdisciplinarity to break away from the isolation of economics itself. He also stressed the key role of universities in this process:
“Scholarship helps to rethink the economy and build institutions for economic science that truly serves life. ยป
