“I will not be the president of a party (UDP) or a tribe (Luba). I will be the president of all Congolese people,” said Felix Tshisekedi, the president-elect of the Democratic Republic of Congo, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the provisional results of the December 30 election.
“Regarding this electoral process, no one thought it would be peaceful. Everyone thought we would face confrontation, violence and bloodshed. No one could imagine a scenario where the opposition candidate would win. I am happy for my supporters and I am happy for the Congolese people,” Mr. Tshisekedi said in a speech at the PDS headquarters in Kinshasa.
He added that Thursday, January 10, was a historic day for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the opposition. He paid tribute to the founders of the Union pour la démocratie et le progrès sociale, who initiated the struggle and whom he considered a symbol of victory. He also paid tribute to outgoing President Joseph Kabila.
“I know that for many of us this is difficult to accept, but I sincerely say that I salute President Joseph Kabila. Today, we must consider him not as an adversary but as a partner in the democratic transition of power in our country,” Mr. Tshisekedi said.
