Felix Tshisekedi has been elected President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He received 38.57% of the votes in the December 30 elections, according to preliminary results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, January 10. Turnout was 47.56%. 18,280,820 valid votes were cast.
Martin Fayulu came in second with 6,366,732 votes (35.2%). Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary came in third with 4,357,359 votes (23.8%).
According to the revised INEC schedule, the final results of the election will be announced by the Constitutional Court on January 15. The new president is scheduled to be sworn in on January 18.
But the announcement of the election results three days later than originally planned may also change the date of the announcement of the final results and the date of the swearing-in.
A total of 21 candidates are vying for the top post. Vital Kameré has withdrawn from the race to support Felix Tshisekedi, with whom he formed the Corner of Change (CACH) coalition. Freddy Matungulu, Sylvain Mashek and Jean-Philibert Mabaya have joined Martin Fayulu of the Ramuka coalition.
But these late gatherings were not taken into account by the Independent Electoral Commission, and the electoral law does not provide for political alliances to withdraw their applications on their own after the final list of candidates is announced.
Of the seventeen remaining candidates, three have emerged as leaders in the race: Emmanuel Ramazani of the Common Front for Congo (FCC), a sprawling platform of pro-Joseph Kabila parties, Felix Tshisekedi of the Corner of Change (CACH) and Martin Fayulu of the Ramuka Alliance.
