WASHINGTON (Auditor) – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn has requested that the case against Mexican drug trafficker Ismael El Mayo Zambada García, originally assigned to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, be transferred.
Justice Department prosecutor Jaime Esparza asked the Texas court to transfer the El Mayo case to New York, saying drug dealers accused of diverting fentanyl would be given a speedy trial in Brooklyn.
On February 15, the Eastern District of Brooklyn prosecutor unsealed a superindictment against El Mayo, charging him with trafficking fentanyl, a deadly substance that causes overdose deaths from synthetic drugs in the U.S. at a rate of 330 every 24 hours, into New York State.
Esparza, speaking for U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone, argued that the case against the “capo de capos” and founder of the Sinaloa drug cartel is a priority for New York because of the deadly consequences on society of synthetic drug consumption, which produces more fentanyl than the U.S.
“The (Brooklyn) court finds that justice can be served if the government’s request to schedule the defendant’s initial appearance in the Eastern District of New York is granted,” reads the motion filed by U.S. Attorney Esparza.
The argument of federal prosecutors in New York in prosecuting El Mayo was that they had the most solid case against a Mexican drug trafficker in their area and that there was no doubt he would be quickly convicted at trial.
Mayo Zambada was detained by U.S. authorities on July 25, along with Joaquín Guzmán López, one of the sons of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera, after landing at the Santa Teresa Municipal Airport in New Mexico.
