State Governor Seyi Makinde on Wednesday disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrading of Alakiya Airport in Ibadan to an international airport.
Makinde, who received the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Abubakar in Ibadan, said the president’s approval made his government’s efforts to upgrade the airport a reality.
He explained that the upgrade works will begin within the next three weeks and will include the construction of a new terminal building, runway and other structural facilities.
“The project will be handled by experts and delivered to standards,” he said, noting that he had identified the need for airport upgrades as central to his economic expansion agenda.
Speaking on the development projects of his administration, Makinde said his administration had been working hard to turn around the state’s economy over the past five years.
“Our government is determined to build infrastructure to achieve its economic expansion goals and has invested resources in the 110km Ibadan Ring Road.
“This government will consider the Air Force’s application for land for a post-retirement housing scheme in the Ring Road corridor,” he said.
The governor commended the officials of the Office of the Chief of Air Staff for their efforts in collaboration with brotherly security agencies in the defence of Oyo State.
He urged the maintenance of cordial relations between the army and the people.
Makinde equally noted that his administration has been committed to working with the Air Force on the construction of the Air Force Base in Aja, Ibadan.
He assured Abubakar that he would honour his promise to complete the road leading to the base quickly.
Earlier, the Chief of Air Staff in his speech hailed the Governor as a visionary leader and thanked him for his support to the Air Force.
He noted that the acquisition of 60 hectares of land for the Ajah Air Force Base and provision of vehicles for safe operations were commendable efforts by the governor.
Abubakar acknowledged the governor’s focus on economic development and strengthening security in the state.
“The Air Force will continue to support the state and strengthen mutual relations with the state,” he assured.
