Farmers grazing before the storm. This photo was taken yesterday, but conditions got worse in the morning when the wind picked up and snow started falling. Photo: Evelyn Year
Today’s weather is absolutely the most boring, and it will probably continue like this tomorrow and possibly Thursday. On social media you can see many pictures showing this. On the contrary, the weather in Skagafjörður has cleared up this afternoon and more roads are flat, but there is ice or slush in many places. Öxnadalsheiði is passable now, but Holtavörðuheiði and the north have slush with a speed of 19 m/sec.
Feykir contacted Evelyn Ýr Kuhne, a tourist farmer in Lýtingsstaðir, but she said that the weather this afternoon was a little brighter than in the morning and that it was not possible to see between the houses. When asked if all the money was in the house, she said yes, that the grazing was done yesterday in difficult conditions and that the money was now in the house and it was all outside the door.
Evelyn posted on Facebook this morning that the ditches were starting to fill up with snow and were therefore becoming dangerous for money. At that time, ice had already started to form on the fences and there was a possibility of ice on the power lines.
According to Feyki, farmers who had the opportunity to take home money yesterday took advantage of it and herded their cattle. One day of this winter weather in early summer might not be a big deal, but if it lasts for four or five days, it is another matter and farmers are worried. The cattle may develop mastitis or start seeking shelter in ditches where they could drown.
Farmers have been known to take in newly born foals and keep the smallest foals, so when bad weather like this hits, there is a lot to think about and a lot of work to do to get everything right.
