Pet owners want to be closer to pet food
Fewer people are involved in breeding than those who pay attention to it due to concerns about high costs and the need to travel to other areas that are not nearby, which still has an impact.
Twizerimana Jackson, a breeder who raises 3,000 chickens in the Brera district, returned to the problems caused by the difficulty in finding food for the animals, saying: “We find it difficult because there are no factories now that can process these chickens, and there are no traders near us. Even where there are, most of them are mixed with mud and become heavy, rotten, wasted, white chickens, those that are past their time, they cannot grow when you feed them, and many of them die.”
Access to pet food remains a challenge
The breeder has a house that can house more than 10,000 chickens, most of which he does not keep because he decided to move them to the Rulindo district because he had trouble seeing what to feed them.
Fish farmers also face this problem, including members of the Isugi Cooperative, which engages in fish farming in floating ponds in Kinoni District.
“Fish food is very expensive for us because it comes from far away. The food we feed them comes from Nyanza district. It is a long way compared to other parts of the world. If we find the factories or their traders now and buy them nearby, the fish production will increase even more,” said Uyingiye Odette, head of the cooperative.
Most of their animal feed is grown in remote areas because there are no processing plants nearby.
The only company, Indintambwe Feed Ltd, is located in the area and its size is related to the amount of food it processes and the amount of feed farmers need to feed their animals.
Nshutiyimana Jean Bosco, the owner of the factory in Rugalama district, said they started processing only chicken and pig feed because the factory was still in the process of rebuilding its equipment, such as some machines used to process different types of meat’s food which they had not yet eaten.
The Burela District Chief, Deputy Mayor for People’s Welfare, Mwanangu Theofile, said they will work hard with investors and seeing that there will be people involved in setting up industries or businessmen will bring them and it will be easy for farmers to observe them closely.
Existing pet food processing plants are also at a medium level
“While we are working on long-term and short-term planning, we are also thinking about how to work hard to attract investors and PSF to participate in projects to improve the livestock sector. Even in the animal food processing industry, we assure the people that they will not hesitate to find the nearest one and experience it, so its production will increase and benefit them”, he said.
Most of the plants are grown in Kigali city, Nyanza district or Rulindo district, except for one factory that processes animal feed and distributes it to farmers on local farms.
