He is pushing hard to delay the election so he can stay in office longer.
October 18, 2021.
MOGADISHU, Somalia – Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who has a negative record associated with love seats and lawlessness, has become the person who has sat on the chair for the longest time since the failed revolution led by Mohamed Siyad Barre. Farmajo, who has become the person who illegally declared the president of Somalia for the longest time after Siad Barre, has not followed the path of his predecessor.
It has been 4 years, 8 months and 10 days since Farmajo was elected as the leader of the country, which means that his term of office is 8 months and 10 days, which is an illegal period, extracted from Article 91 of the Constitution. The Constitution stipulates that the President shall serve for a term of four (4) years, calculated from the date of his swearing in. The previous four presidents, namely Hassan Sheikh Mohammed, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed and Abdikassim Salad Hassan, did not add more time, but they are all different from Farmajo.
Let us recall the era following the four presidencies preceding Farmajo.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected President of Somalia on September 10, 2012, and handed over the presidency on February 16, 2017, which means his term of office was 4 years, 5 months and 6 days.
Sharif Sheikh Ahmed was appointed to the country’s top post on January 31, 2009, and stepped down on August 20, 2012, meaning he held the post for three years, six months and 20 days. Sharif’s term was three years.
Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed was elected president on October 14, 2004, and took over the presidency on December 29, 2008, which means that he served as president for 4 years, 2 months and 15 days.
Abdikassim Salad Hassan assumed office as the country’s president on August 27, 2000, and resigned on October 14, 2004, which means that he served for four years, one month, and 17 days at the same time after a four-year term. Adding his desire to extend his term by two years, and adding that he will continue to hold the country’s highest office during the presidential election, he can be said to be the most in power president since Siad Barre.
Farmajo is pushing hard to postpone the election so that he can stay in the presidency longer.
