There have been rumours on social media that he may resign once the UK’s Brexit treaty with Spain is finalised, but Fabian Picardo has insisted he will serve out his final term as Gibraltar’s chief minister.
Rumours have been swirling on social media that Picardo is set to resign as First Minister later this year, with Health, Care and Business Minister Gemma Arias-Vasquez reportedly set to succeed Picardo as leader of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP).
However, Picardo strenuously denied claims that he would not complete the term of office he has held since 2011. He told public broadcaster GBC News in Kelly Rock that the rumors were “false and baseless rumours”.

Earlier, Justice Minister Nigel Feetham said he would be willing to run for GSLP leadership if Picardo did not seek re-election.
Mr Picardo had previously said this would be his final term as first minister and expressed his hope that his successor would be a woman, becoming the first female leader of the Kerry Rock state, but he said he was pleased a politician of Feetham’s calibre was willing to put his name forward.
There are rumours that Picardo may resign amid intense negotiations between Gibraltar, the UK, Spain and the EU over a post-Brexit treaty deal, which will be delayed due to the current general election campaign in the UK.
