Thank you very much for accepting our interview today. First of all, What are the best practices for AI when it comes to security?
As: Privacy concerns related to AI are significant. Generative AI has significant implications for data privacy by drawing new content from a large number of existing sources. In general, AI can be used as both a weapon and a defense, so it is important that companies have clear policies in place on how to interact with generative AI systems. This helps ensure that private and sensitive information is not incorporated into large language models.
Given the evolving digital threat landscape, how is Intermedia demonstrating its commitment to AI and cybersecurity?
As: We always prioritize security, investing in solutions that protect everything from our data centers to our applications and users. We implement a range of tools designed to build a barrier against attackers and threats. Because attackers always target users, we focus on building features and activities that empower users to protect themselves. For example, we set sensitive defaults for our security services, ensuring that even if someone enables a service without security, it is still secure by default. When we integrate third-party security solutions, we also try to build a lot of flexibility into our products so that we are always ready to make adjustments.
Privacy threats are always a concern. How is AI changing cybersecurity in the UC space?
As: Let’s take email as an example, since many threats come in through inbound email. Our technology used to rely on identifying previous threats we encountered to detect similar threats in the future. However, attackers now use AI and other technologies to make each threat appear new and unique. This is where AI technologies such as Natural Language Understanding (NLU) can come into play. NLU can analyze an email and understand its intent, determining if the email is trying to hack or manipulate you. This is a feature we didn’t have a few years ago, but now it’s essential for us at Intermedia. It’s extremely useful in cybersecurity and fighting threats.
This is definitely a necessary tool when it comes to safety. As companies begin implementing more AI-driven technologies, what can they do to protect their businesses?
As: As businesses begin to explore AI solutions, it’s important to remember that your interactions with these technologies help train machine learning models. It’s critical to understand the implications of using these solutions. Privacy will always be a concern, so protecting yourself by educating your employees and adopting measures and tools that are safe for your company will provide a better, more secure experience for your users and customers.
In honor of World AI Day, what advice would you give to clients or consumers of AI?
As: Embracing the power of AI, especially generative AI, is critical for any business. However, it is important to approach it with a high degree of skepticism. Generative AI won’t do all the work for you, but it can handle a large portion of it. From a security perspective, it is wise to always assume the worst and trust it, but verify. Generative AI can potentially produce inaccurate information, so it is very wise to maintain a cautious mindset and constantly verify the output.
