Chisinau is shrouded in an unbearable smell: experts are trying to determine the source
Once again, the capital was shrouded in an unbearable stench. People said that the city smelled like a cesspool at night. The smell was strongest in Chekany and Botany.
The Environmental Protection Agency suspects the problem lies with the wastewater treatment plant. Whether this is true will be revealed on Monday when test results come in. Former Environment Minister Valeriu Munteanu also agreed with the environmentalists, saying there were problems with the treatment plant and that wastewater was flowing directly into the Bull River.
“There was a lot of foam and dirt in the water, and apparently the treatment plant had failed and untreated water ended up in the Bull River,” Valeriu Munteanu said.
Capital Water, which manages the treatment plants, denied this.
“We have not introduced sludge since the spring,” said Nadezhda Fotescu, a spokeswoman for the Apa Canal.
A water company spokesman believed the source of the contamination was the vodka factory on Monsesti Street.
Town residents said they had previously complained to the mayor’s office, but no comment has been made yet.
