President Chan Santohi held an important meeting on the Suriname Food Plan, which aims to ensure that all sectors of society have access to basic food.
During the meeting, a comprehensive assessment of the “vegetable basket” project was conducted, evaluating the current status of the “vegetable basket” project, the number of existing “vegetable basket” stores, their locations and the extent to which they meet the demand for affordable food.
Santokhi stressed the importance of the widely accessible food basket programme, which has shops in the districts and in the interior.
He therefore decided to expand the range of food basket stores so that all citizens could have access to a wider variety of products at affordable prices.
In addition, a new affordable food program will be developed in partnership with neighborhood organizations.
The team was tasked with investigating the possibilities for these extensions and improvements.
Another meeting will be held within a week to present the findings and a possible implementation plan to the president.
The focus is to ensure that everyone in Suriname, no matter where they are, has access to the basic food they need.
