The Prize is open to African writers who were born in Africa, are nationals or residents of an African country, or have African parents.
This award is open to African poets who do not have a full collection of poetry published at the time of submission. Self-published poetry collections, chapbooks and pamphlets are exempt from this restriction.
Only English poems are accepted, but we also welcome translated poems. If the winning works are translated, the translator will receive a percentage of the prize money.
Past or present paid employees of the University of Nebraska Press, Akashic Books, or Amarion Press, or current faculty, students, or employees of the University of Nebraska are not eligible for this award.
African poets who published pamphlets New Generation of African Poets Pamphlet Set If a complete collection of poems has not yet been published, the collection may still be eligible for the Evaristo Prize for African Poetry.
