The “arc of conflict and instability” threatening Europe’s borders will be the focus of an upcoming European Political Community (EPC) meeting near London, the new British government said on Saturday (July 13).
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose Labour Party won a landslide majority in the July 4 general election, will welcome more than 45 European leaders at Blenheim Palace in west London on Thursday.
Outside of the summit, he will also meet Irish leader Simon Harris and French President Emmanuel Macron as his new government “looks to rebuild relationships with key European partners”.
The Starmer government said in a press release that the summit would address “some of the most pressing intergenerational issues” facing the African continent.
The British Labour Party also added that NATO, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the European Commission will attend the European Peace and Security Council meeting for the first time, “demonstrating the importance of unity in responding to conflict and instability in and around Europe.”
Starmer warned that “Europe is at the forefront of some of the greatest challenges of our time”, stressing that “Russia’s brutal war” “continues to reverberate across our continent”.
The two leaders will also meet at Winston Churchill’s birthplace country home to discuss illegal immigration and energy.
“We cannot be spectators of this history. We must do more and go further, not only for the brave Ukrainians on the front line, but also for those who have been trafficked from one country to another, and so that our children and grandchildren can look back with pride on what our continent has achieved together,” Starmer said ahead of the summit.
The prime minister, who is a staunch supporter of Britain remaining in the European Union, pledged to “transform the way the UK engages with its European partners and work together to drive solutions to these generational challenges”.
In his first week in office, Starmer reiterated Britain’s “unwavering” support for Ukraine and is expected to use the conference to push for continued international military and financial support ahead of a predicted “difficult winter”.
This will be the fourth EPC meeting held since the organization was founded in October 2022.
