The European Commission (EC) announced on Tuesday that it has authorized two genetically modified maize crops for the EU single market and renewed the authorization of another genetically modified maize crop for food and animal feed. TASR reporters reported on this.
However, the European Commission’s decision only allows the import of this GM corn for use as food and animal feed, but not for its cultivation within the EU.
Approved GM maize crops have undergone a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation process to ensure a high level of protection for human and animal health and the environment.
These genetically modified crops are said to be safe for health
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a favorable scientific assessment concluding that these GM maize crops are as safe for health as conventional natural maize varieties.
The EC license will be valid for 10 years and any products made from these GM crops will be subject to strict EU labelling and traceability rules.
Member States do not have a qualified majority to approve or oppose a permit
The Commission is legally obliged to make a decision on these permits after EU member states failed to reach a qualified majority in favour or against the permits for GM maize crops.
