In the second match of Group A, Hungary faced the strong Swiss team in Cologne. Switzerland had 3 points and Hungary had 1 point. In Group A, Germany and Switzerland both had 3 points in the first match.
Switzerland took over without Xherdan Shaqiri (32) and Zeki Amdouni (23). Kwadwo Duah (27) and Michel Aebischer (27) took their places and both proved themselves.
A simple pass from the backfield, Dua slides the ball past Peter Gulacsi. The flag goes up quickly, but replays show that the game was very tight! VAR decides that the goal stands. It’s the first international goal for Kwawo Dua (Ludogorets Razgrad). A dream start for the Swiss in Cologne. After 13 minutes, Switzerland takes the lead. Hungary is stunned.
A few minutes later, Switzerland 2-0. Rubén Vargas passed the ball to the feet of Hungarian defender Milos Kerkez, who ended up alone in front of the goal. Goalkeeper Gulacsi was able to save the furniture with his shoulder in a critical moment. This was the second big chance for the dominant Swiss.
The Hungarians had a great chance just before half-time. A free kick was given and centre-back Willy Orban was free as a bird on the edge of the box, but somehow he couldn’t finish. The ball fell straight into the arms of Jan Sommer. He was probably offside, but he should still have scored.
The goalkeeper then just had to throw the ball to Abishel on the edge of the box. It felt like his chance was gone but he curled a shot straight into the bottom corner.
Led by Grant Xhaka, the team entered the locker room with Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer from Bologna taking the lead in scoring.
The Hungarian equaliser came from Barnabás Varga (66′). Dominik Szoboszlai floated a beautiful ball to the back post, but this time Varga bent down and nodded past goalkeeper Yan Sommer.
The cross was beautiful. It went right between Sommer and his defender, both of whom stood still.
As normal time was drawing to a close, Dominik Szoboszlai nearly surprised the Hungarians by firing the ball into his own net from a corner kick, but goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi came to the rescue.
Breel Emobolo (93′) finished for the Swiss five minutes into added time. Xhaka’s header was poorly defended and passed to substitute Embolo, who controlled the ball on his chest and calmly passed it to Peter Gulacsi.
Then, Switzerland’s injured striker turned away with a smile on his face. Mission accomplished!
