24 June 2024 (Brussels) – The Council of the European Union announced sanctions against six individuals deemed to be destabilizing and prolonging the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The sanctions target key figures in the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), two factions locked in a brutal war.
The sanctioned RSF personnel include General Abdul Rahman Juma Balakara, who is accused of atrocities in West Darfur, and a financial adviser to the RSF. A prominent tribal leader of the RSF in West Darfur is also on the list.
On the Sudanese Armed Forces side, the sanctions target the Director General of the Defence Industrial System, already under EU sanctions, and the Commander of the Sudanese Air Force, who is accused of indiscriminate aerial bombardment.
In addition, Ali Ahmed Karti Mohammed, who served as Sudan’s foreign minister in Omar al-Bashir’s government and leader of the Islamic Movement, was also included in the list.
The sanctions include an asset freeze, a travel ban within the EU and a prohibition on making funds or economic resources available to targeted individuals. The latest move brings the total number of individuals and entities subject to the Sudan sanctions regime to 12.
The EU previously imposed sanctions on six entities associated with the SAF and RSF in January 2024. In April this year, the EU again called for an immediate ceasefire and reiterated its commitment to using its tools to help end the conflict, protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access.
