BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Union antitrust regulators are asking industry players whether a multi-year agreement between Google and Samsung on generative artificial intelligence (AI) would prevent the use of rival chatbots on Samsung smartphones, Reuters reported, citing an EU document.

Samsung will embed Google’s Gemini Nano in its Galaxy S24 series smartphones. The European Commission said last month it would request information to better understand the impact of the agreement.

The survey asked whether pre-installing Gemini Nano on the device or through the cloud would limit the number of other generative AI systems that might be pre-installed on the same device. In addition, whether pre-installing Gemini Nano would limit interoperability between other chatbots and apps pre-installed on Samsung smartphones.

Respondents were also asked whether they had tried unsuccessfully to reach an agreement with a device manufacturer to pre-install a chatbot, and to elaborate on the reasons for the refusal.
