Flights at Catania airport in Sicily had to be suspended on Tuesday.
Italian Mount Etna on the island of Sicily erupted on Tuesday, with Reuters reporting that air traffic had to be suspended over the island due to the eruption.
Air traffic at Catania airport was at a standstill until 6pm local time. The suspension of air traffic will also confuse connecting flights and may cause cancellations at other airports.
Once the ash cloud clears, airport cleanup begins. Planes also have to be cleared of ash before flying.
Catania airport had to be closed once before, in early July, when Etna, one of the most active volcanoes, spewed lava and ash.
