On Monday, June 24, 2024, former President of Benin, Nicephore Soglo and Dr. Boni Yayi, paid a goodwill visit to Niger to discuss the current crisis in both countries. Upon arrival in Niamey, they were welcomed by the Minister of the Interior, Brigadier General Mohamed Toumba, and the Director of the Office of the Head of State, Dr. Soumana Boubacar.
On Tuesday, June 25, Niger’s Head of State, Brigadier General Abdourahman Tiani, received the two former presidents. Also present were Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zaine, Brigadier General Mohamed Toumba and Dr. Soumana Boubacar. Discussions focused on the need to quickly restore brotherly relations between the two countries.
Nicephor Soglo and Dr. Boni Yayi insisted on the importance of constructive dialogue to overcome the differences that have emerged since July 30, 2023. President Tiani welcomed their initiative and stressed the historic excellence of relations between Niger and Benin. He expressed respect for the wisdom of the elders and spoke about security threats along the common border.
In response, the Nigerien head of state agreed to set up a tripartite commission to normalize relations and resume socio-economic exchanges. The commission will include representatives of the governments of Benin and Niger and two former presidents of Benin.
The hearing ended with the expression of hope for a speedy restoration of peaceful relations. Nicephor Soglo and Dr. Boni Yayi also met with the former Head of State of Niger and encouraged the Nigerien authorities to send a high-level delegation to Benin.
The two former presidents expressed their gratitude for the warm welcome and praised President Tijan for his concern and commitment to regional peace.
