The United Front for Equality, a coalition of more than 60 LGBTQ+ organizations and allies from Puerto Rico and the United States, has launched an unprecedented initiative to evaluate political candidates ahead of Puerto Rico’s upcoming elections. The move is intended to ensure that the rights and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community are a priority on the country’s political agenda.

“Our goal is to provide citizens with a clear and transparent tool to understand the positions of those who aspire to govern on issues that directly affect the LGBTQ+ community in Puerto Rico. This is an important step in ensuring that voters can make informed decisions and that our country’s leaders protect and promote the rights of the LGBTQ+ community,” said Pedro Julio Serrano, one of the spokespersons for the United Front for Equality.

As part of this effort, we have prepared a detailed assessment questionnaire that will be distributed to all candidates for elective positions. The questionnaire explores a broad range of issues that are important to the community, including marriage equality, transgender rights, adoption, freedom from discrimination, and access to health and housing services.

“The United Front for Equality invites all candidates to participate in this initiative and reaffirm its commitment to fight for a Puerto Rico where all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, are treated equally and respected,” said Guarix Agosto, another spokesperson for the front.

After assessing the candidates’ responses or omissions, and evaluating votes for and against LGBTQ+ measures, a campaign will be presented to the country highlighting those who support equality, those who oppose it, and those who ignore us.

“The candidates’ responses will not be anonymous and will be used to spread information through the United Front’s media and digital platforms. In this way, we hope that the public will know which candidates truly support fairness and inclusion,” said Front spokesman Angeles Acosta.

Finally, while all candidates have been contacted, if any candidate for the State Legislature or Governor and Resident Police understands that they have not received and would like to complete the form, they can contact the Equality United Front via email: frenteunidolgbtqpr@gmail.com.

“Not answering our questionnaire is in itself a response. We will take it into account when evaluating them and presenting our findings to the nation. Some will be in favor of fairness, some will be against it, and the omission of some shows the importance they attach to our requests,” concluded Front spokesman Iván Andrés López.

Since its establishment on May 29, the United Front Work Department has been working tirelessly to demand that the political class and society at large respect the LGBTQ+ community and treat them fairly.
