Improved working conditions and a pay rise of around 30% are among the list of demands put forward by EPAL workers since 2019, who stopped work indefinitely last Thursday.
Antonio Martins, spokesman for the trade union committee, accusing the management of the listed company of violating the agreement, said the general strike covers all departments of the company and will depend on whether the common sense of the entity will be interrupted.
Antonio Martins said the workers were willing to negotiate. One of the demands of the striking workers is to delay the payment of wages.
However, in a statement on Saturday Email from KiandaVladimir Bernardo, director of EPAL’s Office of Communication and Institutional Relations, assured that negotiations with the trade union committee were going smoothly, adding that employers would not refuse to pay, but that the conditions were not currently in place to implement the 30% increase.
Vladimir Bernardo said that three meetings had been held between the employers and the union committee since the strike was announced.
To change this situation, the entity has partnered with commercial agents to boost the company’s revenues, an EPAL spokesperson said.
One of the most pressing demands they see is improved working conditions. The workers claim there is no insurance for work-related injuries.
Vladimir Bernardo assured that currently EPAL is negotiating with another insurance company so that workers can benefit from health insurance, but currently the company has a clinic that is ready to help workers.
The spokesman also assured that the normal operation of the water supply in Luanda would be ensured during the strike.
