Fast bowler Gus Atkinson was in fine form, taking 5 for 62 as England comfortably beat Sri Lanka by 190 runs in the second Test match at Lord’s in London yesterday. The win gave England a 2-0 lead with one match remaining and was Sri Lanka’s first defeat at Lord’s, with previous matches ending in draws. England captain Ollie Pope celebrated his series win with one match remaining.
Sri Lanka showed some resistance, with Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal and captain Dhananjaya de Silva all hitting half-centuries, and Milan Ratnayake making 43. Sri Lanka could not withstand the pressure from England, and the team scored 292 with 33 overs remaining on the fourth day.
Sri Lanka started the fourth day at 53 for 2 in order to achieve a tough target of 483. Dimuth Karunaratne fought hard to score his first half-century of the series and formed a 55-run partnership with Angelo Mathews, who contributed 36. By lunch, Sri Lanka were 136 for 4 having lost two wickets, including that of night watchman Prabhas Jayasuriya. A more serious blow was the dismissal of Karunaratne.
Dinesh Chandimal gave Sri Lanka hope as he scored a comfortable 58 runs off 62 balls, hitting 11 fours and teamed up with Mathews for the fifth over of 59. However, Kamindu Mendis was soon caught out for four and Atkinson struck twice in quick succession to undermine Sri Lanka’s efforts.
Before the tea break, Dananjaya de Silva (45) and Milan Ratnayake (26) added another 60 runs for the eighth wicket, and Sri Lanka led 7-260 at the break. After the tea break, England switched to the new ball, and Dananjaya scored his 16th fifty off 68 balls, which included seven fours. However, Atkinson struck again with the new ball, dismissing Dananjaya for 50, ending a partnership of 73 for the eighth wicket. Milan Ratnayake also played aggressively, scoring 43 runs off 56 balls, which included seven fours, but Atkinson took his fifth wicket, and Sri Lanka were bowled out for 292 with 33 overs remaining on the fourth day.
Gus Atkinson was the best bowler with 5 runs for 62 in 16 overs, while Chris Woakes and Olly Stone took two runs each. Atkinson was named the Man of the Match for his maiden century and five wickets. Other standout performances included Athisa Fernando’s five wickets and Joe Root’s two centuries.
The third and final Test will begin on September 6 at The Oval.
