Energy and UAE Transport launch electric vehicle charging project

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, represented by the Emirates Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Company, in partnership with the Emirates General Transport and Services Company (Emirates Transport), has launched a joint project to install and operate electric vehicle charging stations within Emirates Transport buildings, a step towards strengthening the country’s electric vehicle infrastructure, according to a press release yesterday.

The project is part of the objectives of the UAE Electric Vehicle Charging Station Company, which supports the “Global Electric Vehicle Market” transformation project, which aims to support the transition to the use of green transport systems and increase the number of electric vehicles in the country to 50% of the total population by 2050, which in turn will help achieve the goals of the UAE Climate Neutrality Strategy 2050 and the goals of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 by accelerating the transition process to clean and environmentally friendly modes of transport, significantly reducing emissions in the transport sector.

Eng Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Electric Vehicle Charging Station Company, said: “In this project, we seek to prepare joint studies towards a future of public transport using hydrogen fuel, research and evaluate sustainable modes of transport and engage relevant stakeholders and investors in these goals, in addition to collaborating to support the goal of the climate neutrality strategy for the transport sector by 2050 and jointly develop policies for the adoption of electric vehicles in the UAE private sector.

“Our electric vehicle market is growing steadily and we plan to increase the share of electric and hybrid vehicles in the total number of vehicles on the country’s roads to 50% by 2050, compared to their share of 3% at the end of last year,” he added, stressing that electric vehicle sales will account for 13% of the country’s total vehicle sales by 2023, a trend that is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

He continued: “Through the Emirates Car Chargers Company, we aim to install around 100 charging stations this year,” with more than 1,000 stations expected to be installed across the country’s emirates by 2030.

Alex Renter, an official at Emirates Transport, confirmed that the new station will help promote the use of electric vehicles, an important step towards a complete transition to green transportation in the near future.
