The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has announced its decision to withdraw its support for the planned nationwide protests.

The caucus, Labour Party Lagos Patriots, also known as Yoruba Obidionte, which represents the majority of opposition members in the state, stressed its opposition to using Lagos as a battleground for demonstrations.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the coordinator of the Lagos Patriots Party, Aboderin Aduragbemi, outlined the group’s concerns that peaceful protests could be hijacked and turn violent.

“We believe that citizens have the right to protest peacefully; however, we know from experience that peaceful protests will be hijacked and turned violent in an effort to discredit the organisation/Labour Party,” the statement read.

They encouraged members of all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos and other Lagos residents not to join the protest.

Instead, they urged citizens to engage constructively with their governments to ensure the delivery of high-quality democratic dividends.

The statement continued: “We do not believe it is necessary to politicise every situation in the country and take advantage of the masses, especially when the government is doing its best to manage the current economic situation.”

The group stressed that they are committed to objective criticism and opposition without resorting to tribalism or a “beat ’em down” mentality.

Recognising that the current government needs time to sort things out, the Labour Party’s Lagos Patriots group called on citizens to be patient, saying: “We believe that they should be given that opportunity before citizens take over the streets in the name of #Endbadgovernanceprotest.”
