Emergency protocols for nursing homes after floods: ‘Never experienced anything like this before’

The ground floor of the Mehrefelt nursing home in Veldhoven was flooded due to heavy rain on Saturday evening. “The water was coming in from the street. We have never experienced this before,” said a care worker on Sunday morning.

Now it is mostly dry in the building. There is still water everywhere. The restaurant is still closed because it is not completely dry there. The residents’ rooms were also flooded by the rainfall. Now they are dry again.

The water did not cause any major problems, according to staff. Emergency protocols have been activated, meaning additional personnel have been called in to help.

Due to heavy rain and thunderstorms over our province on Saturday evening, many streets were flooded. For example, the road in Veldhoven was closed due to waterlogging.

Several streets in Veldhoven, such as Abdijlaan and Dorpstraat, were completely flooded. On ASML’s Kempenbaan, water reached 30 centimeters above the asphalt. A gym in Veldhoven also had water flowing into it.
