El Merek Bentiu beat Gor Mahia in African Champions League

South Sudan Premier League champions El Merriekh Bentiu defeated Gor Mahia FC (Kenya) in the first leg of the 2024/2025 TotalEnergies African Champions League preliminary round.

After a goalless first half, Mohamed Moussa put El Merih Bentiu ahead in the 67th minute, delighting the home fans at Juba Stadium on Sunday.

The Kenyan champions tried to counter-attack and scored but failed to penetrate the El Merih defence.

“I’m happy to score the only goal that put us on the scoreboard in front of our home fans,” said a delighted Mohamed Moussa.

Elmerih Bentiu FC played well in the recent CECAFA Dar es Salaam Kagame Cup, drawing with SC Villa FC (Uganda), losing 0-0 to APR FC of Rwanda, 1-0 to Singida Black Stars FC (Tanzania) and finally losing 1-3 to Singida Black Stars FC.

In another match between CECAFA teams, hosts Azam FC (Tanzania) defeated APR FC at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam. Brazilian import Jonil Blanco scored a penalty in the 56th minute after Fe Toto was brought down in the box.

Subsequently, JKU SC (Zanzibar) suffered a 0-6 defeat to Pyramids FC in Cairo, Egypt, while Al Hilal (Sudan) lost a hard-fought 2-1 to Al Ahly FC in Benghazi, Libya.
