The Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has said paying the monthly salaries, retirement benefits and pensions of his workers is not much of an achievement as a governor and if that is the only thing he can do, then he has no right to govern.
Oyebanji, who spoke at the swearing-in ceremony of three new permanent secretaries at the conference hall of the Governor’s Office in Ado-Ekiti, said the governor’s duties were more than just paying the wages and allowances of workers.
He added that the governor’s responsibility, apart from making people live comfortably, is to provide security to the people so that they can sleep peacefully.
The Governor encouraged the new permanent secretary to give his all, as a manager of the government’s human and material resources, to grasp the direction of government policies and to give his all at critical moments.
Oyebanji challenged the Permanent Secretaries to step up to the plate, saying: “To whom much is given, much is expected. I expect you to take control of the policy direction of this administration. As Permanent Secretaries, you are the stewards of the human and material resources of the government. I also ask you to give your all at this critical juncture.
“In a few months, this government will be two years in power. So, we need to run faster than we are now. So, all permanent secretaries must redouble their efforts so that we can achieve shared prosperity under this government.
“You must therefore be committed to honesty, transparency and discretion, especially at times like these. As an HR manager, you need to foster an atmosphere of teamwork, confidence-building and collective responsibility.
“You should be a leader and solution provider who inspires others. You must also embrace innovation and technology.”
The new Permanent Secretary, Mr. Michael Boluade, spoke on behalf of the Governor and thanked the Governor for the appointment.
Boluade assured that the appointees would remain committed to developing the state, commending the governor for ensuring that all appointments during his administration were made on merit basis.
