The opposition candidate Antonio Ecarri signed a recognition agreement with seven presidential candidates to accept the results of the elections of July 28 next year, after which he asked the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) to hold a presidential debate. The CNE announced that it left no room for any possible claims.
“I have asked the president of the National Electoral Council and the head of the electoral department to formally call for a presidential debate,” Ekary said, assuring that his signature was conditional on a debate with Venezuela’s president. Nicolas Maduro has not yet confirmed whether he agrees.
Of the 10 presidential candidates, neither Edmundo González Urrutia, the candidate of the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Platform, nor his people-centered opponent, Enrique Márquez, attended the signing ceremony of the agreement.
González Urrutia had earlier reported that he had not been invited to sign the document, which he had previously rejected, arguing that the Barbados Agreement signed in October by Chavismo and the United Democratic Alliance contemplated the recognition of the election results, and that Márquez had not yet signed the pronunciation.
The agreement, proposed by Chavismo and officially announced by the CNE, seeks to explicitly recognize the work done by the governing bodies in the electoral process according to the established timetable.
It is also necessary to maintain a “climate of respect, peace and democratic participation” so that on election day and in the days that follow, “the will of the Venezuelan people is not disrupted or ignored by acts of violence and destabilization that threaten the well-being of the country”.
It also includes various points already considered in the Barbados Agreement, such as the recognition of the “guarantees” of the election results or process, or those contained in Venezuelan legislation itself related to the defense of the “homeland,” stability, democracy or respect for human rights.
